ARKANSAS REPERTORY THEATER
LITTLE ROCK CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAU
Founded in 1976, Arkansas Repertory Theatre is the state’s largest nonprofit professional theater company and has long served as an important cultural institution in downtown Little Rock. WER Architects has been involved with the facility across multiple generations of its history, first as part of the original architect team responsible for transforming the building into a theater in the 1980s and later as part of the team for a major renovation in 2012. This longstanding involvement provided WER with a unique understanding of the building, its history, and the evolving needs of the organization.
The 385-seat theater occupies a three-story, early 1900s general retail building, creating a complex adaptive reuse project that required the integration of specialized performing arts spaces within an existing historic structure. The facility also includes a 99-seat experimental black box theater on the upper floors, providing a flexible venue for alternative performances and productions. The lobby serves a dual purpose as both a welcoming gathering space and an art gallery, extending the theater’s role as a cultural destination beyond the stage.
Exterior improvements during the renovation included repair and restoration of the historic glazed brick, replacement of missing sections of the original cornice, and repair and replacement of storefront and upper-floor windows. These improvements helped preserve the character of the historic building while addressing the functional and performance requirements of a contemporary performing arts facility.
The original Arkansas Repertory Theatre project received both state and regional AIA Design Awards, as well as an Arkansas Times Interior Design Award, recognizing the project’s successful transformation of an existing commercial building into a vibrant and distinctive performing arts venue. WER’s continued involvement with the theater demonstrates the firm’s commitment to thoughtful adaptive reuse, historic preservation, and the long-term evolution of important community and cultural facilities.
