Chemistry Building

University of ArkansaS

Fayetteville, Arkansas

Project Details
70,000 square feet
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in America

The University of Arkansas’ Chemistry Building was constructed in 1934-35 and had not undergone any major renovations since. In fact, much of the facility had been abandoned and was being used for storage. In the Summer of 2002, WER was selected as the architectural lead to renovate the entire historic structure to create modern offices and state-of-the-art laboratories.

Over the course of five years, the Chemistry Building was comprehensively renovated with new laboratories, classrooms, seminar rooms, a lecture hall and office space for the Chemistry Department and ancillary staff.

The project also included the restoration of historic materials on the exterior and interior corridors and lobbies to preserve the character of the building. Restoration work included stone patching, tuckpointing, crack repair, cleaning, brick cleaning, plaster repair, terrazzo repairs, historic light fixture restoration and wood door/millwork restoration.

The University of Arkansas Chemistry Building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and all of the renovation work was reviewed and approved by the State Historic Preservation Office.
