Lakeport Plantation is one of Arkansas’s most significant surviving examples of antebellum architecture and the last remaining pre-Civil War plantation home in the state still oriented toward the Mississippi River in its traditional manner. Constructed beginning around 1858 in the Greek Revival style, the home’s grand scale, architectural character, and remarkably intact historic fabric provide an important opportunity to better understand and interpret Arkansas’s complex agricultural, architectural, and cultural history.

WER led the renovation of Lakeport Plantation through a four-phase restoration and adaptive reuse project, transforming the historic property into a museum and cultural center operated by Arkansas State University. The project required a thoughtful balance between preserving the character and authenticity of the historic structure while introducing the infrastructure, accessibility, and functional improvements necessary to serve as a public educational facility.

The preservation effort placed particular emphasis on retaining and conserving the building’s original materials and architectural details. The substantial amount of surviving historic fabric provided WER with an opportunity to apply careful conservation practices while allowing the building to continue serving a new purpose. Each phase was developed with sensitivity to the historic structure, ensuring that modern interventions complemented rather than compromised the character of the original home.

Today, Lakeport Plantation serves as an important cultural and educational resource in Southeast Arkansas, providing visitors with an opportunity to engage with the region’s history and the people and communities connected to the plantation. The completed project demonstrates WER’s experience in historic preservation, adaptive reuse, phased implementation, and the thoughtful integration of contemporary needs within significant historic structures.
