MAIN LIBRARY

CENTRAL ARKANSAS LIBRARY SYSTEM

WER Architects, in joint venture with Polk Stanley Wilcox Architects, was part of the design team for the cornerstone of Little Rock’s River Market District, the Central Arkansas Library System Main Library. The Main Library is housed in the Fones Brothers Warehouse, which was a long-standing downtown landmark built in 1921. The five-story building was completely renovated in the late 90’s by the WER and Polk Stanley Wilcox design team. It has served as the library system's flagship location since its opening in 1997.

After almost 30 years, the Central Arkansas Library System approached the original design team to evaluate the current needs of the community and how the Main Library can serve them. After conducting a full condition assessment and feasibility study, WER and Polk Stanley Wilcox designed a full renovation of the Main Library.

The Main Library now offers patrons thousands of books and audiovisual items in an updated and modern facility that serves the public through many different programs. A new multi-purpose facility was created on the ground level to host events, cooking classes and educational programming. The children area was also moved to the ground level, creating an indoor and outdoor oasis for children and their families. The teen area was moved to the second floor and offers not only books and audiovisual needs but a podcasting studio and 3D printing area as well. Floors three, four and five now offer reading rooms, individual and small group study areas, public meeting rooms, an extensive reference department and library staff offices.

WER worked with Boulevard Bread Company and designed a full cafe on the ground level for patrons and a rooftop patio was added to the sixth floor. The new Main Library opened in the Fall of 2025 and has reinvigorated the community and connection of downtown Little Rock in the River Market District.
